What Does Medicare Part D Cover?

Medicare coverage is health care coverage that’s available to you when you turn 65 or if you have certain disabilities that qualify you for coverage early. The different parts of Medicare each cover different aspects of your health care. How you add on to Medicare and prioritize your health care coverage needs is up to you. Part D coverage can help cover the cost of prescription drugs. Discuss your Medicare options with your agent at Professor Medicare to get started.  Pharmacy medication bottle with prescription pad. Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D coverage, also known as drug coverage, can include assistance with prescriptions drugs cists as well as recommended shots or vaccines. You qualify for Medicare Part D after joining Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan that has drug coverage.

Which Drugs Are Covered Under Part D?

Most Medicare drugs plans have a list of drugs that are covered. This list includes both brand-name and generic drugs. This list typically includes at least two most regularly prescribed drugs in each category or class to ensure different medical conditions are covered. Plans are also subject to change depending on the classification of safety with each drug.

There are several tiers available for Part D coverage:

Tier 1—lowest copayment: most generic prescription drugs
Tier 2—medium copayment: preferred, brand-name prescription drugs
Tier 3—higher copayment: non-preferred, brand-name prescription drugs
Specialty tier
—highest copayment: very high-cost prescription drugs

There are exceptions to each tier, but it’s important to discuss which option is right for you with an agent before finalizing coverage. Plans will differ, so be sure to discuss with your agent what your plan includes.

What Are Generic Drugs?
Generic drugs are the same as brand-name drugs in the following classifications:

  • Dosage form

  • Safety

  • Strength

  • Route of administration

  • Quality

  • Performance characteristics

  • Intended use

A generic drug must be proven to work the same way a brand-name drug works before it is approved by the FDA. Not all brand-name drugs have a generic counterpart. Be sure to discuss your needs with your doctor or prescriber before choosing a generic drug option over a prescribed brand-name option.
